Robert Lincoln

Obituary of Robert A Lincoln

Lincoln, Robert A. “Bob” Age 79, of Little Egg Harbor, departed this life on October 19, 2017.  He resided in many corners of his cherished state of New Jersey, including Haddon Heights, Gloucester City, Lakewood, and Chatham.  Early in his life he was a paratrooper in the Army, a mail carrier, and, ultimately one of the first waves of computer programmers with Bell Labs.  Gifted with a powerful and driven intellect, he was a lifelong student of every art and science. He had a particular interest in American and Political History, earning degrees from Rutgers and Seton Hall.  A master chess practitioner and thinker, Bob composed over 6,000 chess “problems”, artful puzzles of the game. He wrote three books and penned hundreds of columns for publications such as Chess Life.  In 1972, he won the NJ State Chess Championship – this was at a time when enthusiasm for the hobby was at its height thanks to Bobby Fischer. His skill in chess composition brought him renown and friendship all over the world, from his first trophy in the mid-50s to International Medals in the 2000s.  He and his beloved wife of 50 years, Carol, travelled widely in Europe to attend events, seek out friends, and delve into the culture.  In addition to Carol, Bob is survived by his sons Robert F. (Maribeth) and Jeffery (Amy).  He was blessed with four granddaughters, Beth, Elise, Zoe, and Cassie.  To celebrate Bob’s love of New Jersey seashore communities and wild animals, donations are welcomed to the Cape May County Park and Zoo.  Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation with family at Maxwell Funeral Home in Little Egg Harbor on Friday, 10/27 from 7 – 9PM.  There will be a graveside service on 10/28 at 11AM, held at the Washington Chapel Cemetery in Valley Forge, PA.
