I only recently read about the passing of Robert Lincoln in the latest StrateGems periodical (January 2018). Bob's miniature mate-in-two chess problems are like a continuous carnival of wonderful acts one right after another! May the Lincoln family find comfort knowing Bob will be remembered as a great artist in the chess composition field. America should be so proud of having him as its own.

As a fellow chess problemist based in Bristol, England, I have happy memories of correspondence with Bob going back over many years, and in particular of meeting Bob and Carol when they visited gatherings of problemists in the U.K. during their European travels. I found them unfailingly cheerful and resolute in the face of health problems, and in Bob's case unfailingly prolific in coming up with ideas for making a very few chessmen dance to his command to illustrate any number of the themes that are beloved of problem composers and problem solvers. He leaves a great gap in the chess problem world - I'm sure I can speak for all the members of the British Chess Problem Society in testifying to our sense of loss and in our sending condolences to Bob's family and friends.

My good friend Bob Lincoln, who has been ill, passed away on Thursday, October 19th. I mentioned him in several of my postings, the most recent on October 13th. He went peacefully. We were friends for many years. Opposites attract and we were as opposite as they come. He the intellectual…a published chest player. Me…sports that favored bicycling. A regular Oscar and Felix. We met over thirty years ago when living in Lakewood, New Jersey. While commuting to work, the bus was involved in an accident. As became normal, he escaped without a scratch. I suffered injuries to my right leg…the same leg that is currently injured. Regardless, our friendship began.
The early years I ran for a position on the Architectural Committee where we lived. My chief supporter turned out to be Bob. That was exciting times…but time does move on. He moved to Chatham, New Jersey. Later I moved to Williamstown. This perhaps was a low period between us due to the distance. However our friendship continued by mail and telephone.
Thankfully he moved to Little Egg Harbor that allowed us to visit each other. During this time he wrote and published several books on chess. He also became a celebrity with a book store signing!
There is so much to recount it is impossible to list all. His humor was classic for dryness. All this and more will dearly be missed. So my friend…it is time to say goodbye.

I am so very sorry of your loss of Robert. Losing someone we love can be so devastating. "He heals the brokenhearted; He binds up their wounds." Psalms 147:3
This verse was so encouraging when my mother passed and I hope this helps your family and friends of Robert as well. I would be glad to assist any who need help with the grieving process using the healing power of the scriptures. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in the memories you have of Robert.
Sincerely, Ann Turner email: toynah5@gmail.com
