Obituary of Joseph Smeraglia

Joseph E. Smeraglia Sr., 90 of Little Egg Harbor, NJ passed away on Wednesday February 6, 2019.  Joseph was born in Elizabeth, NJ where he grew up graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1946 before meeting his wife Sophia (nee Nycz).  They were married on September 9, 1951 and settled in Rahway, NJ.  Joe was an active member of the community working as a union carpenter for Local 715 in Elizabeth, NJ where he served as trustee and proudly served in the United States National Guard.  They were members of St. Mark’s parish.  He was also an active member and officer of the Royal Arcanum Woodside Council 1358, a fraternal organization.  Joe retired in 2005 and relocated to Little Egg Harbor with Sophia where he enjoyed the beauty and splendor of the Jersey Shore. 

Joseph was predeceased by Sophia whom he was married to for 64 years and his sister Josephine Urso.

He is survived by his loving children Joseph Smeraglia Jr. of Garwood, NJ and Diane Gilmore and husband Jim of Amityville, NY, grandchildren Caroline Deanna, James Joseph III, great grandson Thomas and Sister Lillian Renna.

Visitation will be held on Friday February 15, 2019 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM at Maxwell Funeral Home, 160 Mathistown Road Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday February 16, 2019, 11AM at St. Mary of the Pines Church, 100 Bishop Way, Manahawkin, NJ 08050.  Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manahawkin, NJ.
